Are You a Procrastinator? Stop it!

There’s nothing wrong with taking a break, but you know procrastination when you see it. Here’s how to recognize the signs of procrastination and stop the cycle of excuses and delays so you can achieve more success in life and in business.

If you have ever been a leader, manager, or business owner with employees, you’ve experienced what it’s like delegating an important task under deadline. From experience, you’ve probably learned who you can trust to complete the task well, and on time, when others fall short.

Have you ever delegated a time-sensitive task to an employee only to find them making excuses, waiting until the last minute, or wasting time when they should be working on your project?

It probably got you fired up.

So here’s a question for you: If you don’t tolerate procrastination from others, why would you ever tolerate procrastination from yourself?

  • Will I won’t I comment ? LOL :-)

I believe you are correct about learning about the people you trust to do a job but the reality is that different people work in different manners and as a manager / leader you need to understand them. Some people do there best work when up against tight deadlines and even if they are doing the job ‘Just in time’ (JIT) as long as it gets done that is the main issue. To people who are very organised and disciplined about their work those who seem to do all their projects and work based on JIT may seem inefficient but when you dig a bit deeper they tend to be just as productive as colleagues who have a more structured appraoch.

That is a very valid point! I never thought to look at it that way… “If you don’t tolerate procrastination from others, why would you ever tolerate procrastination from yourself?”

  • I struggle with procrastination — every single day — the strange thing is I actually enjoy whatever I’m putting off doing.

I think the problem is far too complex to put it down to any particular thing.

There’s a famous quote from William James: “I don’t sing because I’m happy; I’m happy because I sing”

If you put “take action” in place of “sing” it makes sense, procrastinators don’t take action because they’re happy … they’re happy because they take action.

So the key for procrastinators like myself is to get ourselves to somehow take action by any means necessary, regardless of what “state” we are in or how we are feeling.

  • Hi Anne,
Popping over to visit your blog from the Social Media fan page on facebook. To answer your question, with work team, everyone has a different style or approach to getting things done. To be effective, a manager or team leader has to understand how to nudge people into action without pushing them over the edge when deadlines loom. Working relationships can be destroyed by one person on the team holding everyone else up from moving forward.
