Time to Have a Life

Like lots of folks I work very hard sometimes putting in 12-15 hour days. I do my work with energy, enthusiasm and passion and I must admit that sometimes I even find it difficult to disconnect.

I also have a family. A book club group. A gym membership. A love of movies, travel, music, friends and photography and time to indulge in each.

Yep, I have a life.

So why is it when I am pecking away at my laptop on a Sunday or emailing at 10PM I am often “accused” of not having a life or of not having a good work-life “balance”.

For me, I feel totally in balance. I don’t whine and moan about the time at my computer, nor do I feel unhappy when I “check in” while on vacation.

Both of these facets of my life seem to work in sync and I don’t find myself engaged in one pursuit while wishing that I was doing something else. In combination they all serve to keep me energized and happy; removing one or some feels like there would be a void.

If anything I merely wish for more hours in the day to do more of what I am doing. I don’t wish for more hours to solely spend with my kids or at the gym or even on vacation, or more hours at my desk or in work pursuits. If possible I would want to divvy up those additional hours and spread them around. But we all get the same 24 hours, no more, no less. How you choose to use them is up to you.

It’s all fine thank you very much. This is my life.

  • Adrian, I agree with you on the daily routine. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Unfortunately I also have found that there are times when it is broke and I have not stopped for diagnosis.
Never admitting that there is not enough time.
Never delegating because time is not available.
Always believing that one more trip, conference call, sales call, phone call or email can fit into the day is dangerous at times.
The only way to find out if you are not spending enough time on any one thing is to ask the people that are involved in it with you.
They can usually spot a dead battery.

  • It[‘s ridiculous to criticize someone who’s done as well as you have, created a valuable resource for many, with some benefits to your goodself, and is happy about the result.
You’re currently generating a partnership with a good friend of mine, and he’s excited by you. No better definition of “doing something right.”
For many of us entrepreneurs, the 24/7 “doin’ it, doin’ it. doin’ it” freneticism is finally, an effort to avoid doing what has to be done that we don’t want to do.
I would suggest that you have a look to see if there’s anything hiding from you here.
Meanwhile, thanks for all you have done. I hope you’re getting all the rewards you can.
    Best to you,
    Craig Jennings

  • Adrian… well put! I recently read that “balance is a choice”. That being said, no one said that the ratio of time spent on work vs personal life must be 50/50. Just as long as the amount of time devoted to each aspect of your life is working for you, and it sounds like it is, that’s all that matters.
