What Makes Something Valuable?

Is It Worth Anything?

Have you ever heard the saying, ‘Beauty is in the eye of the beholder?’  Well, it speaks of value and how value is different depending on differing opinions, life experiences and ideas.  Items obtain a sense of value for several reasons, here are some to consider:

Historical Significance:  An item’s historical relevance and significance can impact its value.

Intrinsic Value:  An item is actually valuable such as fine jewlery, gems, or rare pieces of art.

Re-Sale Value:  An item can be sold to others because of a demand in the market.

Popularity Value:  An item can be trendy or hot and have a following.

Sentimental Value:  An item can have a value because of the meanings you have attached to them based on who gave it to you, or under what circumstances an item was obtained.

Understanding these different types of values that people give to items will help you see items from a more objective standpoint.

Another quote to consider is ‘One person’s trash is another’s treasure.’

To focus in on an item’s value, there are some key questions to consider:

Does the item have a monetary or intrinsic value?
Has the item been appraised?
Do you have records & sales receipts on the item to prove its origin and purchase price?
Has the value of this item changed over time?
Is it still marketable/sellable/desirable (if it’s an antique these aspects are crucial to an item’s value)
Does someone else know of the value, or can you find out about the value?

Consider an item’s value when determining whether you want to keep it.

What is valuable to you? What makes it difficult for you to part with items?  Please comment below!
