77 Billion Dollar Paradigm Shift in Local Advertising

Where is the first place you would look if you were searching for a product or service?

If you said the Internet, you are among the 97 percent of the people that have access to it! That is of course not at all surprising, because the Internet offers the most comprehensive, detailed and accessible information for what you’re looking for.

Realizing this fact, local advertisers are moving their marketing dollars from the more traditional media to where their prospective clients are actually looking for their products and service in their geographical area, and that is of course the Internet.

In fact it is estimated that from the 155 billion dollars spent yearly by businesses on local advertising, half of it is moving from radio, TV and print media to online advertising in the U.S. alone.

This 77 billion dollar paradigm shift creates a tremendous opportunity not only for the online advertising agencies, but for the 35 million plus local businesses to be found by the people that are actually looking for their products and services.

This paradigm shift can have a positive effect on this downturn economy for several reasons:

1. It helps local businesses to generate more revenue by easily being found by their local market.

2. It helps online search engines, social media, GPS and smart phone service providers and online advertising agencies increase business exponentially.

3. It helps create more jobs by not only local businesses that contribute to 80 percent of the job market, but it can also provide solid careers by online advertising agencies that are certified resellers for online service platforms like Google and Facebook.

So, it would be safe to say that online advertising arena provides a tremendous opportunity for individuals to become wealthy if they manage to position themselves correctly with the right company in this recession proof industry and the transfer of wealth.

  • Having recently completed a microeconomic study that showed that only 6 percent of new business traffic is coming from internet referral sources, I would caution business owners to be very careful about applying any more than 6 percent of their advertising budgets to internet marketing. There is actually a forumula available extrapolated from tax-funded research that suggests that local businesses that overspend on advertising are actually more likely to see revenues decline unless they match their promotional expenses to their actual new customer acquisition stats. What this means, in laymans terms, is owners and managers need to first find out where their new customers are coming from and subsequently match their promotional expenditures to their most productive revenue growth sources. Example: If 15 percent of my new customers come from radio ads, then 15 percent of my advertising budget should be committed to radio. If 50 percent come from customer referrals, then 50 percent of my advertising budget should go to promoting customer referrals with referral incentives or rewards programs. Simple math. Easy theory.

  • I don’t know where that microeconomic study that Mr. Morgan refers to came from but it is either incredibly inaccurate or the parameters were totally unrealistic. There are well respected and documented studies that show 97% of people check the internet before making a buying decision. Of course, I think that most people understand that because if you want to see what seafood restaurants are in Long Beach, California, what do you do? You go to Google and search “seafood restaurant, long beach, ca”. From our own personal habits I think just about all of us can attest to the fact that that is the way life works right now. 6% of your customers coming from the internet is horribly inaccurate and just down right wrong. I say again, 97% of people check the internet before making a buying decision. This of course would include social media as well as many folks ask their friends for advice on purchase on Facebook, twitter, etc.

However, if you are not on the first page or at least on the first two pages of the google search you might as well not be there however. So, if you work with anyone make sure they can deliver you SEO to the first two pages of don’t spend your money.
