Got S.M.E.?

So, tell me, do you have social-marketing expertise? Think you have what it takes to claim “subject matter expert” in the social media space? These types of survey questions are asked all the time, and the responses usually hint at a white lie, although you can’t tell the respondents that.

Dreaming of True North

Like everyone in a leadership role today, he is being pulled by two opposing demands: The demand to be forward thinking, innovative, and strategic and the demand to be grounded in today’s reality, manage tight resources, be tactical and constantly execute. Sound familiar?

SBIR Reauthorization Stalls Again

After years of heated debate, it seemed very promising that the new Congress would finally be successful in passing legislation to reauthorize the SBIR program because of the long awaited compromise that was reached between the House and Senate Small Business Committees.

Maxwell’s First Law – The Law Of The Lid.

Often business leadership failures are upon reflection simple to identify and may have easily been avoided. The recent failures of Lehman Brothers, Blockbuster and Borders can be pointed to excessive greed, lack of vision and failure in distribution. We won’t miss these companies as we go forward and I suspect we will not have to experience the executives who ran these brands into the ground either.

Know What Your Business is Worth? It Depends: Who’s Asking?

Bottom line: no one buys a business, they buy a solution to a problem or a recognized opportunity. Negotiating from a position of strength requires the seller to know what is really the prize being negotiated. Today the prize is your dream life. Tomorrow, it may be a potential employee, strategic partner or vendor who envies the great business model you’ve built. For most of us, trying to improve our weak areas in operating our business or managing our department comes with the territory. Whatever the area, we feel as if we are required to do battle with what we don’t do well. As it turns out, the majority of people around the world feel this way. In their groundbreaking book Now, Discover Your Strengths, authors Marcus Buckingham and Donald…

The Ultimate Bootstrap Test – Grow Your Business

Through experience I have found that the best way to find out if your start up business will be successful is by running it through a simple test, “Ultimate Bootstrap Test”. So what is this ultimate bootstrap test? Simple, even if you have a facility from a bank, or a nice bundle of cash you saved up over a number of years, or a friend/family member that can help you out financially, put that money aside and do not use it for a set period of time, I have found that about three months is a safe period of time to get an accurate result from the “Ultimate Bootstrap Test”.

Stoked!

I talk and write a lot about passion. I have been described as being passionate about my work, music, surfing, cooking and family. But stoke is something quite different. Passion is something you love to do but stoke is the love you feel for it when you are doing it. On a Sunday afternoon when I am cooking in the kitchen, football on TV with the sound muted and music playing throughout the house I am stoked.
